Advanced Midwifery Practice: Two Days Immersion
This workshop is designed for midwives, student midwives, obstetricians, and doulas.
First day: Prenatal care, birth preparation, and response to history of sexual abuse
- Pelvimetry basics: identifying pelvic type and significance in birth.
- Voluntary hands-on practice in groups of three
- Holistic exam during pregnancy: mother-centered decision making
- Palpation/demo and fine tuning
- Nutritional preparation, review of various diets
- Role playing holistic care in groups of two: using new skills and getting
- feedback
- Involving partner in all aspects of the process
- Response to history of sexual abuse
- Sharing clinical cases
Second day: Physiologic birth, managing complications of labor, and postpartum care
- The deeper physiology of birth, hormones, brainwaves and intuition
- Plateaus in labor versus arrests in progress
- Diagnosing posterior position and asynclitism. Hands-on practice models
- Internal rotation of posterior arrest. Hands-on practice models
- Honoring physiology of second stage
- Managing shoulder dystocia
- Third stage of labor, safe placenta delivery and handling hemorrhage
- Biological nurturing, getting breast feeding off to a good start
- Consequences of cesarean birth for mother and baby
- Debriefing unhappy outcomes (for client and care provider).
- Sharing clinical cases
